William Joel Bryan Chapter #14 Education Scholarship

Purpose: Warren Evans, William Joel Bryan Chapter #14 Sons of the Republic of Texas, has established an annual scholarship in memory of his ancestor, Arrington Howard, as well as the efforts of the many brave men who fought to establish the Republic of Texas. It is through this generous gift that this scholarship be awarded during his lifetime to instill education efforts of Texas history through aspiring higher education students.

Criteria: One scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a student enrolled at either Blinn Junior College (Bryan Campus) or Texas A&M University majoring in history or a major field of study with emphasis on Texas history, preservation and/or restoration efforts. To qualify, students must meet the following application requirements:

 

  • A graduate of a High School in Bryan-College Station or area county where an active chapter member resides.

  • Enrolled at Blinn Junior College (Bryan campus) or Texas A&M University and be in good standing.

  • Junior or Senior student status at Texas A&M University or sophomore student status at Blinn College.

  • Preference will be given to a direct lineal descendent of a William Joel Bryan Chapter #14 member.

  • Have not previously received scholarship awards from the William Joel Bryan Chapter #14.

Application: To apply, students must provide the following:

 

  • Complete the application form. Submission deadline is March 2, 2020

  • Write a 500-800 word essay on a Texas history topic. As part of the essay, include an additional 150-word description why the applicant is interested in Texas history and discuss future plans upon graduation in pursuing a career in history.

  • Prepare to present essay to William Joel Bryan Chapter membership if selected among top three finalists at a special chapter luncheon meeting. Upon presentation of the three top applicants, a finalist will be selected and awarded the endowed scholarship for the academic year.
